Terminology

It is important to establish common terminology for everyone to communicate effectively. The terms below are intended to identify something very specific. There may be other equivalent terms that can be used interchangeably. Let's all try to use consistent language to make things a little more understandable for those not engulfed in the technology world.

Directory - Also commonly called a folder. This is where the computer or a person will gather related computer files. DMB places all the game files into a single directory.

Folder - See "Directory".

Game Directory - This is a special directory/folder DMB creates when the game is installed and contains all the necessary files to play the DMB baseball game.

NARC Player Directory - A special directory/folder where league members install the NARC league file obtained from the web site. It is recommended that this be placed subordinate to the Game directory and be given a fixed name. "NARCGAME" is definitive as it is used to play each series.

NARC Stat Directory - A special directory/folder where league members accumulate their team's season statistics. It is recommended that this be placed subordinate to the Game directory and given a name to reflect the NARC season and keep season statistics segregated.

Root Directory - Each disk drive has one of these directories. It is the disk's master directory/folder in which everything else is stored.

Self-extracting ZIP - This is a file that can be uncompressed by typing the file name. It does not require the use of a related compression manager such as PKUNZIP, WinZip or Zip Magic.

Working Directory - A special directory/folder where files are temporarily kept while being (un)packaged. The name of this directory should remain fixed from year to year. "WORK" should suffice and it is recommended to place this off the root directory.

ZIP - A standard file compression format that allows one or more files to be compacted in to a single smaller file. This is used to help speed transmission of data and to give each file upload/download a single purpose.
